Fence Questions and Answers for Billings Homeowners

Short answers to common fence questions in Billings, MT: post depth, concrete or gravel, staining, painting vinyl, gates and more.

Quick answers to questions we get often. Prices, permits, repairs and neighbor issues each have a longer guide, linked at the foot of this page.

How deep should fence posts be set?

Below the frost line, and deeper for gates and tall solid fence. Montana's building bureau uses three feet as the minimum footing depth for one-story buildings in the areas it permits, and cities such as Billings set their own figure. Shallow posts are why so many fences here lean.

Should posts be set in concrete, gravel or foam?

Concrete for gate posts, corners and wind-loaded privacy fence. Gravel at the bottom of the hole helps drainage in clay, and packed gravel alone can suit some line posts. We do not use foam where a post carries a gate or a tall panel.

How long should I wait before staining a new wood fence?

Wait until the wood has dried. In Billings' dry air that is often quicker than the label suggests, a few weeks for cedar and longer for wet treated pine. Drip water on a board. If it soaks in, stain it. Do not leave bare wood through a whole summer of sun.

How much does it cost to stain or seal a fence?

The price follows the square footage and how weathered the boards are. Ask for it as its own line on the fence estimate.

Can I use deck screws to fix loose pickets?

Yes, as long as they are coated for outdoor use or stainless. Bare steel rusts and streaks the boards. Use stainless in cedar to avoid dark stains around each screw.

Can a faded vinyl fence be painted?

Yes, with paint made for vinyl, though it becomes a job you repeat. Dark colors soak up heat and can warp panels in strong sun. Try a thorough wash first.

I want a double gate for an RV or trailer but my posts are weak. Reinforce or rebuild?

Rebuild the gate posts. A wide double gate needs large posts set deep in concrete, and ordinary line posts will not hold one square, least of all in wind. We replace the gate posts and the panel next to each.

Does a new fence raise my property taxes?

Ask the Montana Department of Revenue office for your county. A yard fence is minor next to the house and land.
