How much does it cost to fix a leaning fence?

Count the bad posts and you have most of the answer. A lean comes from posts, so one or two posts is a standard repair and a long run of failed posts is a major one. When most posts in a run are loose, rebuilding that run is the better value.

Why is my fence leaning, and can it be fixed without replacing it?

Around Billings there are three common reasons. Clay soil swells and shrinks and works posts loose. Wood posts rot at the soil line. And wind pushes on solid privacy panels month after month. If the rails and pickets are still good, we change the failed posts and hang the same fence back up.

How much does it cost to replace a rotted fence post?

One or two posts sit in the $300 to $900 range by national figures. We dig out the old post and its concrete, set a new one deeper, and reattach the rails. A post in cobble or on sandstone takes longer to get out and back in.

My gate sags and will not latch. Repair or replace?

Repair it in most cases. The hinge post has usually moved, the hinges have worn, or the gate frame has gone out of square. We reset the post, brace the frame and line up the latch. If the frame itself is rotted or bent, a new gate on a solid post is the fix.

How much does a contractor charge to fix a broken gate latch?

It is a minor repair, $100 to $300 by national 2026 figures. Expect a minimum trip charge from most companies, and more so for an address outside Billings. Have loose boards and other small items handled on the same trip.

My fence posts lifted over the winter and the gate will not close. Can they be reset?

Yes, but not by pounding them down. This is frost heave: frozen ground grips a shallow post and raises it. The lasting repair is to pull the post and footing and set a new one below the frost line once the ground has thawed. We can adjust the gate to work until then.

My fence line goes wavy every winter. Is it the soil or a bad installation?

Some of each. Billings clay holds water, freezes hard and moves a lot, so it punishes shallow posts. Posts set deep, with footings that are not wider at the top than at the bottom, stay in line in the same soil. Rebuild with the same shallow holes and the wave comes back.

A branch bent my aluminum fence. Do I need a whole new panel?

Sometimes. A few aluminum systems allow a single rail or picket to be changed. Most arrive as assembled panels, and the bent section is replaced as a unit. A photo of the damage and of a post bracket is usually enough for us to tell.
