Storm Damaged Fence in Billings: What to Do and Who Pays

What to do when wind, hail or a fallen tree damages your fence in Billings, MT: fast repair, insurance, neighbor trees and temporary fixes.

If a storm took out part of your fence, photograph it before you move anything, then call your insurer and a fence company. Billings gets summer thunderstorms with hail and hard gusts, and strong winds in the cold months, and both knock fences down.

Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?

Call or text us the length on the ground and a few photos. A downed section with snapped posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 by national 2026 figures. After a big wind or hail day the whole city calls at once, so getting on the list early matters.

My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?

Ask for a temporary closure. We brace what is still standing and close the opening with a temporary panel until the full repair. Say so on the phone if there are dogs, livestock or a pool behind the fence, because those jobs go to the front.

Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?

Often, and not every company offers it. Ask before anyone drives out. The lower-cost path is usually a quick temporary closure first and the permanent repair on a regular working day.

Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?

Many policies cover fences under other structures, but the policy, the deductible and the cause decide it. Some Montana policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible. Only your insurer or agent can tell you. Our written estimate is itemized so you can send it to them.

My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?

Usually your own policy pays for your own fence, wherever the tree was growing. That can change if the tree was dead or clearly unsafe and the owner knew. Put the question to your insurer. If matching material is available, we replace only what was hit.

The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?

The policy may pay only the depreciated value of an older fence. Ask the adjuster to show the math in writing, and send an itemized estimate back. If the numbers still do not meet, repairing just the damaged stretch is a common compromise.

The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?

Montana law says adjoining owners are bound equally to maintain the fences between them, unless one of them leaves their land unfenced (Montana Code 70-16-205). Unless you have agreed otherwise, each owner looks after the half to the right of the midpoint of the shared line, seen from their own land. A land surveyor, not a fence company, settles where the line is. See our page on shared fences.
